Switzerland’s opening goal at Euro 2024 has showcased just how well semi-automated offside could work in the Premier League.
Kwadwo Duah found the back of the net against Hungary following a delicious assist from Michel Aebischer, only for the goal to be ruled offside.
Replays then quickly showed London-born Duah may well have been offside.
The semi-automated system quickly swung into action, analysing the incident.
And referee Slavko Vincic then swiftly signalled that the original decision had been overturned and the goal had been awarded to make it 1-0.
The technology, which has now showcased it’s speed and accuracy in the opening two games, is going to be adopted in the Premier League next season.
And former Chelsea star Scott Minto was delighted that a bad call was so quickly rectified.
He said while co-commentating: “I’m loathed to have a go at officials too much, because I know the pace of the game nowadays.
“But I do think at this level that should have been seen pretty clearly, and if you want to be really negative, it took [the moment] away because he put his flag up straight away.
“The initial first celebration and joy of scoring, but I have to say I think Duah certainly made up for it when he was allowed and ran towards the bench and they all celebrated together.”
He added: “You can talk about the levels of technology and you can have the argument there, but that is why certain technology needs to be in the game.
“Because that was a really good goal, fully deserved, and it was overturned correctly.”
“That’s why that technology needs to be in the game,” he added.
And when he learnt of Duah’s place of birth, he was disappointed he won’t be available to Gareth Southgate.
“It’s a shame he can’t play for England,” Minto said.
Meanwhile talkSPORT commentator Adam Bridge remarked of the offside technology: “It is just that kind of error that VAR was introduced for.
“It took no time at all, how the assistant has called that as offside in the first place, I do no know.”
