Scotland v Switzerland Match Preview

Scotland endured a crushing 5-1 defeat against Germany in the tournament’s opening match on Friday evening.

The loss was about more than just the scoreline but highlighted a lack of fight, spirit, tactical awareness, and belief, leaving the Tartan Army despondent.

Watford defender Ryan Porteous was sent off for a terrible challenge on Ilkay Gundogan, leaving his team a man down for the entire second half. As a result, Porteous has been banned for the remainder of the group stage.

They now head into Wednesday’s match knowing that a loss will likely see them fail to reach the knockout stages once again.

Steve Clarke’s squad need to recapture the form that earned them a spot in this tournament. They have to be much more proactive without the ball, and when in possession, they need to get dynamic midfielders like John McGinn and Scott McTominay into shooting positions.

McTominay scored seven goals during qualifying, and McGinn boasts an impressive 18 goals in 67 international appearances, but both players were passengers against Germany in Munich on Friday evening.

In contrast, Switzerland’s tournament began on a high note. They showcased their experience and superiority against Hungary, sealing a 3-1 victory with a late goal from Breel Embolo.

The Swiss know that a draw against Scotland will likely see them into the last 16 of the tournament, and it will be interesting to see Swiss coach Murat Yakin’s team announcement on Wednesday.

Swiss lacking value

The bookmakers have reacted to Scotland’s loss against Germany by pricing them at 16/5 to win in Cologne, and Switzerland are now 9/10 despite winning just four of their last ten internationals.

Scotland were impressive in qualifying, beating Norway in Oslo and Spain at Hampden. They do have a knack for turning things around quickly, such as in Euro 2020 when a hard-fought goalless draw at Wembley against England followed an opening-match defeat against the Czech Republic.

There has to be a reaction from Scotland in Wednesday’s clash, and at the odds, a play on Scotland (Double Chance) could pay dividends.

Time for Shankland

Steve Clarke could roll the dice on Wednesday evening and pitch in Lawrence Shankland from the start, with the Hearts striker heading into the tournament having topped the scoring charts in the Scottish Premiership last season with 24 goals in 37 appearances.

He may lack Che Adams’s physicality, but Scotland need goals in Cologne, and Shankland is the more natural finisher.
