Reaction to Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland at Euro 2024

COLOGNE, Germany :Following is reaction after Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland in their Group A clash at Euro 2024 on Wednesday, with goals from Scott McTominay (Scotland) and Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland).

Scotland defender Andy Robertson: “Much more like us – aggressive on the front foot, couldn’t have got off to a better start. We had our chances, but so did they, it was an open game, two really good teams going at it.

“It was just about getting back to being us. But I thought it was a lot more like us, you can tell by the people behind the goal there. They were a lot happier with what they’ve seen on the pitch, and we’ve also left absolutely everything out there today and that’s what it takes to play for your country.”

Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour: “We gave everything out there. We knew we had to bounce back after the last performance and it puts us in a good place.

“We’re a good team. We know our strengths. Tonight was more like a Scotland performance. Getting after the ball, passionate – everything was there.”

Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn: “Everything in the game from the start was 10 times better from the game on Friday night – our intensity, pressing the ball, our aggression, winning the ball high up. That really set us off at the start of the game. The lads managed to keep it going for 90 minutes.

“Personally, I was hurting after the game on Friday night, didn’t feel like I had done myself justice. A lot of the boys in the dressing room felt like that as well. That was the motivation for today – to come out, show what we’re all about and I think everyone to a man’s done that today.”

Switzerland manager Murat Yakin: “(Shaqiri) lives for moments like this. We still have one game to go and we will do everything in our power to make it out of the group. It was a different kettle of fish tonight against Scotland. We haven’t yet done the job but we have taken a big step tonight towards the knockout phase.”

“We are happy with four points and the way we got them. We can’t wait to get out there and play Germany. It’s not like we have to win and have our backs against the wall, but it will be an interesting match.”
