A late Germany equaliser ensured a share of the spoils against Switzerland, as Die Mannschaft secured top spot in Group A.
Dan Ndoye had put Switzerland in the lead in the first half, and it had looked like the Swiss Nati would finish first in Group A until a late Niclas Füllkrug header shattered the Swiss’ dreams and rescued a point for the hosts.
Germany will now face second in Group C in the round of 16, whilst Switzerland will face the runners-up in Group B, as both sides look to advance to the latter stages of Euro 2024.
Here are VAVEL’s player ratings for the game:
Manuel Neuer – 6
The German goalkeeper was relatively untested in goal, only having to make two saves throughout the match, and there was nothing he could do to prevent Ndoye from scoring.
Joshua Kimmich – 7
Kimmich was solid defensively, and helped to provide an option in possession for Germany, bombing forward down the right flank.
Antonio Rudiger – 6
The towering centre-back was relatively quiet by his standards, but still showcased his defensive talent, winning his ground duels and making several good challenges. He did struggle with the physicality of Embolo on occasions throughout the match but was mainly solid for the hosts.
Jonathan Tah – 6
The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back was dominated by Embolo at times, and was replaced by Schlotterbeck in the second half.
Maximillian Mittelstadt – 7
The Stuttgart defender was a constant threat for Germany throughout the game. The left-back frequently got forward and delivered several threatening deliveries into the Swiss penalty area.
Robert Andrich – 7
Andrich was a bully defensively, and helped ensure Germany could nullify the Switzerland attacks. Andrich also showed good comfort on the ball, and along with his counterpart Kroos, showcased an impressive passing range which helped Die Mannschaft dominate possession.
Toni Kroos – 7
The Champions League winner dictated the tempo for Germany and several key passes through the Switzerland lines. Kroos continues to be the heart and soul of the German team, with all possession coming through the Real Madrid midfielder.
Ilkay Gundogan – 6
The German captain struggled to make an impact on the game, as he found time and space in the half-spaces hard to come by.
Florian Wirtz – 6
Wirtz was unable to threaten Switzerland the way he has done in previous games in Euro 2024. The compact Swiss defence did a very good job of nullifying the German attacking trio which has been so impressive so far throughout the tournament.
Whilst he did have brief moments where his quality was visible, Wirtz will know more is expected if Germany are to live up to expectations as one of the tournament favourites.
Similarly to Wirtz, Musiala was muzzled by the Swiss defence throughout the game. Brief glimpses of quality were evident but the younger German star man was unable to impact the game too much other than a few progressive penetrative dribbles.
Kai Havertz – 6
Havertz was able to create several chances for himself but his finishing was absent today. The Arsenal striker went close when striking the woodwork, but will have been disappointed not to have threatened the Swiss goal more. Havertz did show good hold-up and link-up play throughout the match.
Substitutes
David Raum – 7
The left-back was very impressive in his substitute outing, showing defensive solidness and also a threat going forward. It was Raum’s dangerous cross which found Füllkrug for the German equaliser.
Nico Schlotterbeck – 6
Schlotterbeck had very little involvement after replacing Tah.
Maximillian Beier – 6
Beier was unable to have much impact after coming off the bench
Leroy Sane – 6
The Bayern Munich winger replaced Wirtz, and made a few penetrating runs up the pitch for his side.
Niclas Füllkrug – 7
The Borussia Dortmund striker had the decisive say for Germany, equalising with a powerful header in the 92nd minute.
Yann Sommer – 6
The Inter Milan goalkeeper’s blushes were spared after VAR intervention ruled out an Andrich strike which Sommer had got all wrong and allowed past him. The 35-year-old recovered well, making a couple of saves and dominating his box from German crosses.
Silvan Widmer – 6
The right wing-back did not have his best game, losing possession repeatedly but the Mainz 05 defender worked tirelessly up and down the right flank to support his teammates.
Fabian Schar – 7
The Newcastle defender was very impressive defensively, and formed part of a superb Switzerland backline. Schar made several key tackles and interceptions, and showed good ability on the ball in possession.
Manuel Akanji – 8
Akanji was absolutely incredible for Switzerland. The Man City defender was everywhere at the back thwarting German attacks, the highlight of which was a goal-saving block merely yards out from the goal.
The defender utilised his pace effectively, and was commanding in the air throughout.
The final member of the Swiss back three, and like his teammates Rodriguez defended valiantly. Whilst he was not as active or as dominant as Schar and Akanji, the Torino defender still had some crucial involvements.
Michel Aebischer – 7
The makeshift wing-back continued his impressive Euro 2024 campaign, working tirelessly on the left flank for his side. Aebischer also offered good attacking support for his side and helped to nullify the German threat.
Remo Freuler – 7
The midfielder was very impressive for Switzerland, helping to break up German possession whilst also offering an attacking threat. It was Freuler’s dangerous cross which assisted the Switzerland goal after the midfielder had advanced into the German 18-yard box.
Granit Xhaka – 8
The Swiss captain continued his season of fine form, as he picked up the UEFA Man of the Match award. The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder was a real engine in the middle of the pitch, constantly getting into the thick of the action both defensively to harass the German midfield and to progress his side forward and issue a threat to Germany.
Fabian Rieder – 6
Rieder struggled to get involved in the game before being replaced by Vargas.
Dan Ndoye – 7
The young Bologna FC winger was a constant threat to the German defence on the counterattack, and he was rewarded for his efforts with a fine first-time finish in the 28th minute to put the Red Crosses in front.
Breel Embolo – 7
Embolo continued his return back from injury with his first start at Euro 2024 after two promising substitute appearances. The AS Monaco striker was largely isolated throughout the game, but when he did receive the ball his hold-up play was good as he helped Switzerland advance up the pitch. Embolo also showed great desire to help his side out defensively, and was a constant nuisance to Die Mannschaft.
Substitutes
Ruben Vargas – 6
Vargas thought he had won Switzerland the game when he dinked the ball over Neuer with a very exquisite finish. Unfortunately for the Red Crosses, Vargas had strayed slightly early into an offside position. The forward was an outlet for Switzerland as they looked to cling onto their lead.
Kwadwo Duah – 6
Duah was very isolated after coming on, but worked hard for his side as he aimed to be an outlet as Germany began ramping up the pressure.
Zeki Amdouni – 5
The Burnley striker had little impact on the game and was unable to threaten the German defence.
