England booked their place in the last eight at Euro 2024 by the skin of their teeth after 95th minute acrobatic equaliser by Jude Bellingham took their Round of 16 match against Slovakia to extra time, which was followed by a Harry Kane winner in the first minute of the additional 30.
Gareth Southgate’s side have struggled to impress so far in the tournament despite having finished top of Group C to put themselves on the more favourable side of the knockout draw.
The Three Lions’ campaign started with a 1-0 win over Serbia before back to back draws against Denmark and Slovenia proved to be enough to finish top of the group despite only picking up five points.
The extra time victory in the previous round means the pre-tournament favourites head into their quarter-final clash with Switzerland having won just two of their last nine matches in 90 minutes.
Switzerland have impressed and won many plaudits across the duration of the tournament so far, especially having comfortably dispatched the defending champions Italy 2-0 in the last round to equal their best ever performance in a major competition.
Murat Yakin’s side came within minutes of securing an unlikely top spot in Group A in their final match of the group stage before conceding a 92nd minute equaliser against Germany, which saw the host nation take Switzerland’s spot at the top of the group, knocking them down to second.
Like England, Switzerland finished their group stage campaign with five points having beaten Hungary 3-1 in their opener, which was followed by being held by Scotland to a 1-1 draw.
The Swiss head into Saturday’s quarter-final having drawn three of their last five matches, but have tasted defeat in just one of their last 18 matches since their elimination from the 2022 World Cup in the Round of 16 stage.
England lead the 31-match head-to-head 22-3 in wins against Switzerland, who are winless in their last 13 against the Three Lions in the last 43 years.
The most recent meeting between the two sides came in a friendly at Wembley in March 2022, when goals from Luke Shaw and Harry Kane saw England come from behind to earn a 2-1 win.
