Xhaka fit to face England after injury scare

Granit Xhaka is fit and will play for Switzerland against England in their Euro 2024 quarter-final.

The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder has been suffering with an adductor problem after receiving treatment on it during the last-16 win over Italy.

The 31-year-old trained with team-mates in recent days, however, and will be part of the Swiss side in Dusseldorf.

“Granit has a lot of experience. He is fit and he trained with the team. I count on him 100 per cent,” head coach Murat Yakin told a news conference on Friday.

“I think he will play a great game tomorrow together with his team. We are all excited about tomorrow’s game.”

Switzerland have impressed in Germany and progressed to the knockout phase in second place in Group A behind the hosts before knocking out Italy in the last 16.

Xhaka’s eye-catching displays for his country follow a fine season domestically.

The former Arsenal midfielder made 50 appearances for Leverkusen in all competitions as they won the Bundesliga title as well as the DFB-Pokal while also reaching the Europa League final.

He has started all four of Switzerland’s games so far, playing 90 minutes in each.
