FIBA confirms list of referees for Paris 2024

MIES (Switzerland) – A 30-strong pool of referees has been selected to officiate at the Men’s and Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournaments Paris 2024.

They have been chosen from an original long list of 40 candidates and have been put through an intense and extensive 13-week preparation program.

There is plenty of experience within the group, with all the referees on the list having already officiated in at least a men’s or women’s FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The selection criteria was based on recent performance metrics. Some of the key factors considered were tactical awareness, the process behind decisions, teamwork, collaboration, mental flexibility and resilience.

There will be seven female referees at the event, an increase from the five who officiated at the Tokyo 2020 Tournaments. The average age amongst the group is 40 years-old, with the youngest referee aged 31 and the oldest being 52 years-old.

The average time spent as a FIBA referee within the cohort is 12.7 years, with 17 referees having officiated at the last edition of the Olympics in the Japanese capital.

Carl Jungebrand, FIBA Head of Refereeing, stated: “Our job is to ensure that the best players worldwide can showcase their skills while maintaining the dynamic nature of our sport.”

We continually aim to introduce new elements that we believe can significantly enhance on-court refereeing and this is why FIBA established the Pre-Competition Program for referees as a new standard a year ago.

“This group of officials has been diligently working within this program on the Road to Paris, and final preparations for the 2024 tournaments will take place at an in-person Pre-Competition Camp, to be held in Brussels just prior to tip-off.”

The Men’s and Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournaments will take place from July 27 to August 11, with the Group Phase of the respective competitions to be played in Lille.
