Nine months before the start of the Women’s European Football Championship in Basel, the plans for the major event are becoming more concrete. A plaza is planned on Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz. In addition, Jean Tinguely’s “Klamauk” wagon will be used as a cultural ambassador.

It is planned that the machine sculpture from the Tinguely Museum will lead the fan marches from the city center to St. Jakob-Park on the opening match on July 2 and the final match on July 27, 2025, as the Department of Education announced on Tuesday.

Activities for the whole family are planned for Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz throughout July. For example, Barfüsserplatz will be transformed into a public viewing area with a “lounge atmosphere”. In addition to match broadcasts, there will also be film screenings and concerts to watch and listen to. An arena with a soccer court, stage, water games and a play area with a giant slide will be created on the Messeplatz.

In addition to the fan plazas on Barfüsserplatz and Messpeplatz, the Rhine, and in particular the banks of the Rhine in Kleinbasel, will also play an important role. Supervised Rhine swimming and sightseeing tours are planned.

350 volunteers

According to the Department of Education, events are being held in Basel on October 12 to mark UN World Girls’ Day. Together with the Football Association of Northwestern Switzerland, the Basel-Stadt Sports Office is organizing the second edition of the World Girls’ Football Day at the St. Jakob sports complex. 110 teams and around 1500 girls are taking part in the tournament.

Ticket sales for the Uefa Women’s Euro 2025 will start on October 1. Registration for volunteers will also begin then. Around 350 volunteers will be deployed in Basel.
