Former Swedish international Alexander Gerndt was seriously injured in a car accident in Switzerland. FC Lugano confirmed his life is not in danger and expressed their support.

The accident occurred early on Tuesday morning in the Ticino canton of Switzerland, when the 38-year-old Alexander Gerndt crashed his car into a rocky hillside for reasons yet unknown. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn, landing on its side, according to a report by Blick based on statements from local police.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Gerndt’s life is not in danger, confirmed FC Lugano, the club he has been associated with for several years. Lugano expressed its support, saying that the entire “FC Lugano family” is united in wishing him a speedy recovery.

Gerndt, who retired from professional football at the end of last season, joined Lugano’s coaching staff following his playing career. He previously represented clubs in Sweden such as Helsingborgs IF, Gefle, Sirius, Gute, and AIK, and made ten appearances for the Swedish national team between 2010 and 2013, scoring two goals.
