In Switzerland, several individuals have been detained, and a criminal investigation has been launched in connection with the suspected death of a person using the new ‘suicide capsule’.
Prosecutors in Schaffhausen canton were notified by a law firm about an assisted suicide that occurred on Monday near a forest cabin in Merishausen, involving the use of the Sarco capsule, according to a police statement.
The “Sarco” suicide capsule, which has not been used until now, is designed to enable the person inside to press a button that releases nitrogen gas into the sealed chamber. This process causes the individual to fall asleep and die from suffocation within minutes
As per the Dutch newspaper Volkskrant said that the police has detained one of its photographers who wished to take pictures of the use of Sarco.
Exit International, a Netherlands-based assisted suicide organization, has stated that it is responsible for the development of the 3D-printed device, which cost over $1 million to create. Swiss law permits assisted suicide as long as the individual takes their own life without “external assistance,” and those who aid in the process do so without any “self-serving motive” according to information from a government website.
