New Delhi: In the modern digital era, as Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to shape various aspects of life, a church in Switzerland is exploring a unique way to connect with the divine. St. Peter’s Church in Lucerne has introduced an AI-powered Jesus for confessions.

According to reports, the church has set up an ultra-wide monitor in its confession booth, displaying a holographic image of Jesus Christ. This AI-driven representation listens to worshippers’ confessions, responds thoughtfully, and provides spiritual guidance, advice, and counselling tailored to their queries.

A video of the ‘AI Jesus’ has gone viral on social media, shedding more light on the church’s initiative. “AI Jesus hears confessions in Lucerne – St. Peter’s Church unveils an AI-powered Jesus hologram for confessions, igniting debate on faith and technology,” the X post read.

What is this church’s initiative?

This initiative is part of a religious art project titled Deus Ex Machina or “God in the Machine,” created by the Immersive Realities Research Lab at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The AI Jesus is programmed to communicate in 100 languages, making it accessible to worshippers worldwide.

Drawing from the New Testament to craft its responses, the system has demonstrated a strong alignment with the church’s teachings, offering thoughtful and consistent spiritual guidance.

The church’s new experiment has received mixed reactions from visitors. While some who engaged with the AI Jesus praised its thoughtful and insightful guidance, others were less impressed. Critics found the experience somewhat impersonal, stating that the responses felt generic and lacked the depth and empathy of a human spiritual advisor.
