The Swiss national football team will visit Leskovci on Saturday, where they will play the League of Nations match against Serbia.
Before the visit to Serbia, the Swiss will not take any special measures and will be accompanied by only three to five security guards on the way to the stadium, although the matches between them in the past have been tense, as the main players among the Swiss years they were Albanians from Kosovo.
The leaders of the Swiss Football Federation have stated that the host team and UEFA are responsible for their security and will not take any additional measures.
The association has no worries as it had good experiences with host Serbia in March 2023, when Switzerland played Belarus in a European Championship qualifier in Novi Sad, even though snipers around the stadium had secured the footballers.
But the matches between Serbia and Switzerland are not like other matches, since after all, the two duels between these teams in the World Championships of 2018 and 2022 caused a lot of controversy, as mentioned, because of the Albanian origin of the Swiss stars.
After there was a media attack before the matches in 2018, Xhaka and Shaqiri, who scored goals in that meeting, celebrated with the double-headed eagle during their goals and caused outrage in Serbia, where this Nations League duel is now highly anticipated .
However, the director of the Swiss National Team, Pierluigi Tami, calms the passions on the eve of the visit to Leskovc.
“These are old stories, for us this is a match like any other. Our focus is only on the game, we will not discuss anymore, we want to win the three points in Leskovc”.
“We don’t want to underestimate the potential problem, but we’re not going to add fuel to the fire. We cannot control the influences from the Serbian side, we focus on sports and we don’t want to waste energy unnecessarily”, declared Tami.
The fact that Granit Xhaka’s non-travel to Serbia has never been discussed within the leaders was also mentioned, as he is the captain and the most important player of the team.
