Bermuda Cyclists To Compete In Switzerland – Bernews

The Bermuda Bicycle Association announced that Kaden Hopkins, Conor White, and Nic Narraway will represent Bermuda at the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Switzerland later this month.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Bicycle Association [BBA] is proud to announce the athletes who will represent Bermuda at the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, this month. Kaden Hopkins, Conor White, and Nic Narraway will compete on the global stage, facing off against the world’s elite cyclists in one of the sport’s most prestigious events.

“The Championships, scheduled to take place from September 22 to September 29, will feature both the Individual Time Trial [ITT] and the Road Race, with challenging courses that promise tough competition. Bermuda’s athletes will be among the best, competing against cycling stars like Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar, Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, and Vuelta a España winner Primož Roglič in the Elite men’s category.

“Similarly, in the Under-23 [U23] category, Nic Narraway will go head-to-head with top rising stars Huub Artz, winner of the U23 road race at the UEC European Championships a week ago; Jørgen Nordhagen, GC and mountains classification winner from Giro della Regione Fruili Venezia Giulia riding for the Visma-Lease a Bike Development team; Joseph Blackmore, the first-ever British rider to win the Tour de l’Avenir; Jan Christen, a neo-pro with UAE Team Emirates and winner of the Giro dell’Appennino; and Giulio Pellizzari, with three seasons on ProTeam level, who was second in the Giro d’Italia mountain classification to KOM and GC winner Tadej Pogačar.”

Event Schedule for Bermuda’s Athletes:

  • Conor White will compete in the Elite Men’s ITT on September 22 at 9:45 a.m. over a distance of 46.1 km.
  • Kaden Hopkins will also compete in the Elite Men’s ITT on September 22 at 9:45 a.m. for 46.1 km, and later in the Elite Men’s Road Race on September 29 at 5:30 a.m., covering a grueling 273.9 km.
  • Nic Narraway will represent Bermuda in the U23 Men’s ITT on September 23 at 9:45 a.m. over a distance of 29.9 km, followed by the U23 Men’s Road Race on September 27 at 7:45 a.m., covering 173.6 km.

Course Overview:

  • Elite Men’s ITT [46.1 km]: Starting at the historic Zurich Oerlikon race track, the route heads to Dübendorf and along Lake Greifensee, with an elevation gain of 413m. Riders will navigate the foothills of Pfannenstiel before finishing at Zurich’s Sechseläutenplatz.
  • U23 Men’s ITT [29.9 km]: The U23 time trial starts in Gossau, sharing the route with the elite women’s event. With an altitude gain of 327m, it descends into a flat finish along Lake Zurich.
  • U23 Men’s Road Race [173.6 km]: Starting in Uster, the course includes two laps around Lake Greifensee before heading to the city circuit. The race totals 2,483m of elevation gain, demanding both endurance and strategy.
  • Elite Men’s Road Race [273.9 km]: Beginning in Winterthur, the race includes climbs to Buch am Irchel and Kyburg, with further loops around Greifensee and challenging circuits in Zurich.

Team Preparation:

“Our riders have spent months preparing for these demanding courses,” said BBA press officer Debbie Titterton Narraway. “The goal for each rider is to perform to the best of their ability, competing against the world’s top cyclists while proudly representing themselves and Bermuda. It’s about executing their best on race day and showcasing what they are capable of on this global stage. With the support of team manager Dave Collins and team mechanic Chequan Richardson, Bermuda’s athletes are ready to compete alongside the world’s best.”

The spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Bicycle Association is immensely proud of Hopkins, White, and Narraway for qualifying Bermuda for these Championships and wishes them the best of luck as they take on the challenges of the 2024 UCI Road World Championships.”
