Euro 2024 quarterfinal action continues Saturday as England takes on Switzerland for a spot in the semifinal. England looked to be on its way out in the round of 16 before a Jude Bellingham wonder goal pushed the game to extra time. Harry Kane found a quick goal in the extra period to see England through. Switzerland made quick work of Italy, scoring on the defending Euro champions in the 37th minute and then adding an insurance goal just after halftime in a 2-0 win. These teams last met in March 2022 with England taking a 2-1 win in London over the Swiss.

England has been dreadful for much of this tournament, largely seeing out games with its defense rather than pushing forward and scoring goals. One would think the firepower on display would eventually find a way to get more creative in the final third, but Gareth Southgate’s tactics simply haven’t been good enough. England’s subpar showings are fine against the likes of Slovenia and Slovakia, but Switzerland is a different beast. After a surprising draw against Scotland, Switzerland nearly had the win over hosts Germany before trouncing Italy. This is an experienced unit that has performed well in knockout rounds before.
Luke Shaw is reportedly at training for England and is in contention to start but he’s unlikely to be heavily featured. Defender Marc Guehi is suspended thanks to a yellow card against the Slovakians. Switzerland has a fully fit roster, with Granit Xhaka cleared to play after appearing to suffer an injury in the match against Italy.
I have little confidence in England being able to breach the Swiss defense but I also think the back line has been great. A draw in regular time seems par for the course right now, and I’ll back the Swiss to find that extra gear in overtime or a penalty shootout to advance to the semifinal.
