England will look to shake off their listless start to Euro 2024 when they meet Switzerland in the quarterfinals of the competition on Saturday in Dusseldorf.
The Three Lions have been, by their standards, exceedingly poor to this point, garnering significant criticism from fans of the pre-tournament favorites. Yet, they have survived — rescued in their last match by Jude Bellingham’s brilliance en route to an extra-time victory over Slovakia.
They will have to be better if they wish to get past the Swiss, who look primed to cause problems in the late stages of the Euros. They managed to draw with Germany in the group stage before beating defending champions Italy in the Round of 16.
After moving to Bayer Leverkusen this past summer and helping the Bundesliga side to one of history’s most incredible seasons, Granit Xhaka has been a revelation for Switzerland in midfield, and England will have to keep him from controlling the pace of the match as he did against Italy in the previous round.
England vs. Switzerland prediction, odds
- Moneyline lean: Switzerland (+275)
- Score prediction: England 0-1 Switzerland
England have managed to survive to this point largely thanks to the lower-tier skill level of their opposition. Here, that no longer applies, and unless things drastically change for the Three Lions, they will finally suffer a deserved early exit.
Gareth Southgate’s stubbornness has resulted in a lack of needed changes for England, and there’s no indication that he’ll finally see the light at this stage. Even if he does manage to plug the gaps, does he possess the tactical nuance to know how to utilize Jude Bellingham properly or get Harry Kane firing again?
Granit Xhaka presents the biggest problem for England in this match, and if he controls the pace of play, just as he did against Italy, England will see their precious possession snuffed out and become desperate for time on the ball.

England vs. Switzerland best bet
- Pick: England half with most corners — 2H
- Odds: +105 (BetMGM)
It’s hard to know whether there will be enough attacking impetus in this match to rack up a high corner count, but there should be more to chew on after the break — to what extent, however, is unknown — that’s the nice thing about comparative selections, there’s no actual bar to clear.
England saw more corners in the second half of all three group-stage games, and while they fell just one short in the second half against Slovakia, that was thanks to a 20-minute empty stretch through the middle stage, a fluky passage of play.
If the Three Lions get desperate, they’ll need to start pushing forward, and the corner count can rack up quickly towards the end of the match.
England vs. Switzerland prop bet
- Pick: England goalkeeper 3+ saves
- Odds: +130 (FanDuel)
Jordan Pickford has not been tested a lot this tournament, as England look to limit opposition chances, but they’ve been pegged back defensively for a few stretches. With Marc Guehi suspended, they could be even more open at the back.
Slovakia managed to get three shots on target, and Denmark managed four in what was considered a drab match. Gianluigi Donnarumma faced four shots on target as Italy fell to the Swiss, as did Angus Gunn of Scotland. There will be chances for Switzerland to score, even if they have to have a go from distance.
England vs. Switzerland goal scorer bet
- Pick: Breel Embolo anytime goal scorer
- Odds: +360 (BetMGM)
While Switzerland have a number of attacking players who can score goals, Breel Embolo is an efficient striker who contributes up front even when mostly quieted during a match. Against Italy, Embolo had just 29 touches, including five in the penalty area, but he still cropped up with a big chance to score that forced a huge save from Donnarumma.
He scored off the bench in their opener against Hungary, eventually earning a deserved place in the starting lineup. Embolo’s not a lock for the 11, so wait until lineups are released before placing this one, but if he’s there, he could cause real problems both cutting in from wide areas or finding space between the England defenders, especially with the impressive Guehi suspended.
