The Euro 2024 quarter-finals have arrived, and this weekend’s action is headlined by multiple exhilarating contests.

If you weren’t a soccer/football fan and had watched the entirety of Switzerland and England’s respective matches throughout this tournament, you would expect the Swiss to win this match.
On paper, the talent gap between these squads is tremendous. Switzerland actually boasts quite an impressive roster, but England’s side is full of legitimate superstars.
The problem for England, unfortunately, is that’s all they appear to be; a bunch of big names taking the pitch with no real strategy or cohesiveness as a unit. We know how Spain, France, Germany, and the other powerhouse nations want to play. England simply has no direction, it truly feels like they walk onto the field assuming they can just outplay their opponents.
Should the blame be put on Gareth Southgate for his lack of a clear game plan? Is it the players’ fault for their blatant complacency? In reality, it’s almost certainly a combination of the two.
The English have scored just four goals through as many matches in this tournament, a shocking number even when you take their lengthy history of underperforming on the international stage into account. It took a world-class bicycle kick from Jude Bellingham to keep their hopes alive, as Slovakia was minutes away from pulling off the massive upset.
On the other side of this matchup, Switzerland has been immensely impressive up to this point. The underdogs are coming off back-to-back fantastic results, a draw against Germany and a decisive 2-0 Round of 16 victory over Italy. Remo Freuler has led the way with a goal and two assists, but everyone on the pitch has consistently done their job.
The Swiss have scored seven goals in Euro 2024, third among all participants. Their defense may not be as formidable as England’s, but the execution in the final third has been far superior.
It may take extra time, but I believe England’s underwhelming run will finally come to an inevitable end this weekend, with Switzerland extending their dark horse campaign to the semi-finals.
