FC Barcelona players continue to shine at international level. Spain earned their first win on Matchday 2 of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League season with a 4-1 win over Switzerland with a brace from Fabián Ruiz and goals from Joselu and Ferran Torres. Lamine Yamal provided an assist.
Spain suffered but won
In a match that should not have been too complicated, Luis de la Fuente’s Spain opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a run by Lamine Yamal that Joselu headed in and Gregor Kobel was unable to stop. But the Swiss quickly equalised in the 8th minute, when Embolo broke free and set up Becir Omeragic. However, the goal was disallowed for a foul in the area, which allowed the visiting team to breathe.
Fabián Ruiz scored the 2-0 in the 13th minute. The Spaniard took advantage of a rebound from the home goalkeeper to score his first goal of the match. Kobel responded after a shot by Nico Williams, but the ball went towards the ‘8’, who did not hesitate to give his team the lead at the Stade de Genève. The worst happened when Robin Le Normand was sent off for an action against Embolo in the 20th minute, which forced De La Fuente to rethink the match. He took off Pedri and gave way to Daniel Vivian to protect the result.
Zeki Amdouni scored the discount in the 41st minute, pushing the ball to the far post and establishing the 1-2 before the break. In the second half, Switzerland wanted to do damage and scored another goal thanks to Vivian against them, but the VAR again came out to save Spain.
Lamine Yamal shines on the anniversary of his debut
The match was decided in the 77th minute, when Ferran Torres escaped in a play and went on the attack to assist Fabián Ruiz in his double. Three minutes later, the Barcelona player sealed the match with a 4-1 scoreline by taking advantage of an error in the Swiss defense. This gave the victory to the Spanish team, which had drawn goalless against Serbia in the opening game and is now second in Group 4 of League A with 4 points, behind Denmark with 6.
For his part, Lamine Yamal celebrated his first year playing with ‘La Roja’ with his eighth assist in 16 appearances. Let’s remember that he made his debut on September 8, 2023 and became the youngest player to play a match with his country at 16 years and 57 days. He took to the field in a match against Georgia where he replaced Dani Olmo. Since then, he has three goals, a European Championship and a nomination for the Ballon d’Or, in addition to being a key player in the culé team led by Hansi Flick, so now is the time when he will have opportunities to continue making history.
