Field for m Everest locked in after brutal call

The final field for The Everest has been confirmed, with Storm Boy taking Coolmore’s slot in the $20m Group 1 feature at Randwick on Saturday.

Storm Boy had always been likely to take the final slot, but Switzerland’s win in the Roman Consul Stakes at Rosehill made it a tough decision for Coolmore supremo Tom Magnier.

He eventually chose the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Storm Boy after mulling over the decision for the past two days.

“We have two outstanding three-year-olds and this was one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make in racing,’‘ Magnier said.

“Switzerland was so impressive last Saturday but in the end we felt the colt would benefit by having an extra week before the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington (November 2).

“Storm Boy has been trained for The Everest and I know Gai and Adrian are very confident they have the colt at his best for the race.

“It’s very exciting for everyone involved to have a good chance in The Everest.’‘

It completes a spectacular field for the blockbuster race, although there is one notable omission.

Think About It, the horse who won last year’s $20 million event, has been left stranded outside the field and will likely be an emergency.

Think About It’s only run this campaign was a sixth placing in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 5 when he worked home well from the rear in a slowly run race.

I Wish I Win is the $5.50 favourite ahead of Growing Empire ($6) and Bella Nipotina ($6.50).

The barrier draw will take place on Tuesday night.
