The Maldives, an idyllic tropical destination renowned for its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and luxurious resorts, is experiencing a steady influx of international visitors as it enters the final stretch of 2024. According to the latest statistics released by the Maldives Ministry of Tourism, over 18,000 tourists arrived at Velana International Airport (VIA) during the first three days of December. Despite a slight decline compared to last year’s figures, the country remains optimistic about meeting its annual tourism goals.

A Strong Start to December

From December 1 to 3, 18,164 tourists were welcomed to the Maldives, representing a 6.2% decrease from the 19,355 arrivals during the same period in 2023. However, the figure marks a slight increase from the 17,055 arrivals during the same period in 2022. This indicates a stable performance as the year progresses, despite global challenges facing the travel industry.

On December 1, the country saw the highest number of arrivals, with 7,100 tourists touching down. This was followed by 5,133 arrivals on December 2, and 5,931 tourists on December 3. These numbers highlight the ongoing demand for the Maldives as a premier tourist destination in the Indian Ocean. On average, the Maldives is welcoming about 6,055 visitors per day this December, a promising sign for the remainder of the month.

November’s Performance

In November, the Maldives recorded a total of 172,987 tourist arrivals, representing a 5.7% growth compared to the same month in 2023. The daily arrivals in November were consistent, with the number of visitors fluctuating between 5,000 and 7,000. The highest number of arrivals recorded in November was 7,001 tourists on November 17, underscoring the growing demand for the Maldives as a sought-after travel destination.

The statistics for November 2024 were in line with the steady growth trend that has characterized the Maldives’ tourism industry throughout the year. While December’s figures show a slight dip from last year, the Maldives is confident that it will continue to see positive growth, especially as the year-end holidays approach.

Year-to-Date Performance

Looking at the broader picture, the Maldives has already welcomed 1,855,799 tourists between January 1 and December 3, 2024. This represents a 9% increase from the 1,703,202 visitors recorded in the same period of 2023. In comparison to 2022, the growth is even more significant, with an increase of nearly 23% from the 1,508,307 arrivals in the same period of that year.

So far in 2024, the Maldives has averaged 5,491 tourist arrivals per day, with each tourist staying an average of eight days. The highest number of arrivals in a single day was recorded on February 10, when more than 10,000 tourists arrived in the country. This demonstrates the Maldives’ continued appeal as a top destination for international tourists.

The country is well on its way to achieving its ambitious goal of welcoming two million tourists in 2024. As of early December, the Maldives is poised to surpass its 2023 arrivals, having already reached over 1.8 million visitors, and the steady stream of travelers through December is expected to contribute significantly to reaching this milestone.

Leading Source Markets

One of the most notable trends in the Maldives’ tourism statistics this year is the dominance of China and Russia as the top source markets. China, with its fast-growing tourism industry, has contributed significantly to the Maldives’ arrival figures, with 252,468 Chinese tourists recorded by December 3, accounting for 13.6% of the total market share.

Russia, a market that surged in popularity during the second half of 2023, continues to play a pivotal role in driving the Maldives’ tourism numbers. By December 3, Russia had contributed 11.1% of total arrivals, with 206,745 Russian tourists visiting the Maldives in 2024. These figures reflect the growing travel appetite from both countries, which have emerged as major contributors to the island nation’s tourism recovery in the post-pandemic era.

Interestingly, the UK, which was previously one of the Maldives’ leading markets, has seen its position slip to third place in the 2024 rankings. The UK accounted for 8.7% of the market share, with 162,285 arrivals. India, which was initially one of the top three markets, has now been surpassed by China in the rankings, contributing 6.2% of arrivals, or 115,011 tourists, as of early December.

Other countries contributing to the Maldives’ tourism industry include Germany, Italy, the United States, France, Spain, and Switzerland. Germany, which is a strong European market for the Maldives, has contributed 7.8% of arrivals (143,903 tourists), while Italy and the US account for 6.8% and 3.4% of the total market share, respectively.

Government Strategies and Future Outlook

The Maldives’ tourism success is a result of various strategic initiatives taken by the Ministry of Tourism to diversify and strengthen its source markets. Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has highlighted the importance of expanding into new markets and exploring opportunities to attract visitors from regions outside the traditional European and South Asian hubs.

The Maldives’ tourism industry continues to evolve, with a focus on sustainable tourism practices and diversifying offerings beyond luxury resorts. The government’s efforts to encourage off-peak travel and sustainable practices are expected to contribute to a steady flow of visitors throughout the year.

With 2024 on track to be another successful year, the Maldives remains a leading destination for global travelers. As it moves towards welcoming its two millionth visitor, the country’s tourism industry is poised to reach new heights, bolstered by its stunning natural beauty, world-class hospitality, and robust tourism infrastructure.

As the country prepares for a busy holiday season and looks ahead to the coming years, its tourism industry is well-positioned for continued success and further growth in 2025 and beyond.
