New Delhi: The second game of the 17th edition of Europe’s premier international football competition will see Group A contenders Hungary and Switzerland start their campaign this evening (June 15, Saturday) at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne.
The Hungary vs Switzerland UEFA Euro 2024 match will be telecast live on Sony Sports Network in India. Live streaming of Euro 2024 will be available on SonyLIV app and website. The action starts at 6.30 pm IST in the evening.
The two nations are in Group A along with Scotland and Germany, who played in the opening game in Munich on Friday night. Hungary will be keen to make an impact in their third consecutive appearance in the European Championship. Despite not winning the championship, they have a decent history in the tournament.
Back in 1964, they had finished third, and after missing the 1968 competition, they finished 4th in 1972. Their performance took a nosedive in 2020 when they lost all three group-stage games.
Switzerland will play in their sixth Euro since qualifying for the first time in 1996. Since then, they have regularly performed well on the big football stage and nurtured talents to improve their squads. In 2020, it reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Spain.
Team news
In their friendly win against Israel, Hungary’s captain, Dominik Szoboszlai, had to go off the field after facing minor hamstring issues. His withdrawal was just precautionary. The Liverpool midfielder is expected to start in an advanced role along with Roland Sallai, who is set to play his 50th game for his nation.
Hungarian coach Marco Rossi is expected to deploy a 3-4-2 formation. The central defence will be lined up with Adam Lang, Willi Orban, and Attila Szalai, with Peter Gulacsi’s experience protecting their goalposts.
Loic Nego and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez will likely operate as wingbacks, with Adam Nagy and Andras Schafer linking arms in midfield. Barnabas Varga, who scored 29 goals for Ferencvaros last season, will be in the lead line.
Switzerland suffered a setback when Steven Zuber received a knock to his calf in their friendly draw against Austria. He could only participate in an individual training session on Wednesday with doubts over his participation in Saturday’s contest.
The good news for Switzerland is that Breel Embolo and Denis Zakaria have recovered from their injuries and participated in the team’s training session. They may be in a position to participate in their match against Hungary.
Aside from the Monaco duo, Switzerland’s stars include captain Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, and Xherdan Shaqiri, who are expected to start, along with Burnley striker Zeki Amdouni, who has scored seven goals from his 15 international games.
Predicted lineups
Hungary: Gulacsi; Lang, Orban, Szalai; Nego, A. Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Sallai; Vargas
Switzerland: Sommer; Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Widmer, Freuler, Xhaka, Ndoye; Shaqiri, Vargas; Amdouni
Head to Head
By numbers, Hungary have an edge over Switzerland, with 30 wins from 46 games. Switzerland have won 11 games. Both teams have played five draws. However, in their last five games against Switzerland, Hungary have won one game, drawn one, and lost three consecutive clashes. The last time Hungary won against Switzerland was in a friendly match in 1998.
