Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer should maintain his role as a starter between the sticks, but Josep Martinez is already making a strong case for himself.
The Nerazzurri revamped their goalkeeping department last summer following the exits of Andre Onana and Samir Handanovic.
Luckily for the Serie A giants, Sommer proved to be a competent replacement. The Swiss veteran became Simone Inzaghi’s first option between the sticks and was almost unchallenged.
Meanwhile, Emil Audero had to settle for a backup role, only making six appearances in all competitions.
The Italian has now returned to his parent club Sampdoria as Inter opted against signing him permanently.
Instead, the Italian champions replaced Audero with another goalkeeper coming from the Port City.
The Nerazzurri bought Martinez from Genoa in a deal worth 13 million euros.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews, the Spaniard has already impressed in the first few days of pre-season.
While the club granted Sommer extra weeks of rest following his EURO 2024 commitments, Martinez has taken center stage at Appiano Gentile.
As the pink newspaper tells it, the former RB Leipzig custodian has already made a big impression on the technical staff.
The 26-year-old has been showcasing a strong character. That is in addition to his renowned technical skills between the posts and with the ball in his feet.
The source notes that Inzaghi has already confirmed Sommer as his Number One between the posts for next season.
Nevertheless, early signs suggest that Martinez could have a prosperous future at San Siro.
The Barcelona youth product will be looking to collect some playing time next season and eventually take the torch from Sommer when his time comes.
