The McLaren Vale region is home to an incredible array of vineyards and cellar doors, many of which have received international recognition and acclaim for their delightful drops. To add to an already impressive list of awards, Woodstock Wine were recently awarded the trophy for ‘Best New World Red’ at the Expovina International Wine Awards in Zurich, Switzerland.
The winning drop? Woodstock’s 2018 The Stocks Shiraz vintage. This is the second year in that Woodstock have won this award, and the first time for The Stocks. Named to pay homage to a set of medieval wooden leg stocks located in the town of Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England, The Stocks Shiraz is Woodstock’s flagship drop.
Valued at $95 a bottle, The Stocks is a wine that perfectly reflects its terroir, variety, and region with an elegant dark red colour and purple tint. Aged in well-integrated French and American oak barrels, this drop has a full-bodied yet soft palate, with ripe tannins and mid-palate red and black fruits harmoniously balanced to create a structured and complex finish.
This single vineyard Shiraz is crafted from 31 rows of low-yielding vines planted as far back as 1900 on a sandy slope on the estate’s northern ridge. The award-winning 2018 vintage marks the winery’s 24th release of The Stocks.
As described by the winemakers, the Stocks comes into its own when aged in bottle. It’s a wine that rewards patient cellaring with the promise of further developing its unique flavours and characteristics. 10 to 15 years is considered the sweet spot for this drop. For serving counterparts, this lush Shiraz pairs well with rich dishes like slow cooked beef or rare seared venison. And, of course, it’ll always go down a treat on its own alongside some fine select cheeses.
Congratulations to Woodstock Wine for yet another international award to add to the trophy cabinet. Once again, South Australian wines shine on the international stage!
