More than two thirds of people in Switzerland have already played money games. Lottery games are particularly popular. This is shown by a new study.
A total of 18,345 people were surveyed in 2022, as announced by the Swiss Federal Gaming Board (SFGB) on Thursday. Of the respondents, 63.7 percent stated that they had ever taken part in gambling. Lottery games are particularly popular, followed by other money games such as raffles and private games.
However, players do not frequently take part in gambling. And their stakes are also low: most respondents stated that they stake less than ten francs a month.
The Institute for Addiction and Health Research evaluated data on gambling behavior on behalf of the Swiss gambling authorities Gespa and ESBK. This comes from the Federal Statistical Office’s 2022 health survey.
According to the Gaming Board, only limited statements can be made about “a change in the problematic burden of gambling” since the last survey in 2017. Compared to European countries, Switzerland remains in the medium to low range in terms of the proportion of people with high-risk and pathological gambling behavior. Online casinos have been permitted in Switzerland since 2019. Foreign providers, on the other hand, are banned.
