For 90 minutes it looked like the host nations at EURO 2024 were going to go down to Switzerland in a not-quite-meaningless final group stage game — in a move that would have swiveled them away from a collision course with Spain but potentially put them on track to meet Italy.
However, substitute striker Niclas Füllkrug (Borussia Dortmund) conjured up the golden touch he always seems to have in stoppage time and snatched a point back for Germany, meaning the hosts top Group A.
The performance will leave burning questions for former Bayern Munich manager and current Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, who did not change his XI for the third straight game. Is the plan getting figured out? Has he run his players — especially his older veterans, Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) and İlkay Gündoğan (FC Barcelona), into the ground?
