The Buffalo Sabres have brought in multiple forwards this offseason, like Beck Malenstyn, Jason Zucker, Sam Lafferty, Ryan McLeod, and Nicolas Aube-Kubel. While this is the case, it is clear that they could use another skilled forward before the start of the season.

Due to this, the Sabres could bring in at least one player on a professional tryout (PTO) to training camp this year. However, one of the Sabres’ top potential PTO options has found a new home overseas.
After not receiving an NHL contract this summer, Dominik Kubalik has signed a contract with HC Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss National League. However, his new contract includes an NHL opt-out clause, which expires on Dec. 15.
Kubalik, 29, is coming off a down season with the Ottawa Senators, recording 11 goals and 15 points in 74 games. However, when looking at his past seasons, he could have been a nice bounce-back candidate for the Sabres or another NHL club to take a chance on with a PTO.
Just back in 2022-23 with the Detroit Red Wings, Kubalik had 20 goals and 45 points in 81 games. Furthermore, he scored at least 15 goals in his first four seasons in the NHL and has two 40-point seasons on his resume. Thus, he has some success as an impactful middle-six winger.
Before moving to the NHL for the 2019-20 season, Kubalik played two campaigns for HC Ambri-Piotta, so he’s a player they know very well. It will be interesting to see how well he performs for them this time around and if he can land an NHL deal before his opt-out clause ends from here. The Sabres should keep an eye on him.
