Shaqiri pips Ronaldo to stunning feat with worldie against Scotland

Xherdan Shaqiri has pipped Cristiano Ronaldo in becoming the first European to score in each of the last six major tournaments.

The ex-Liverpool star scored one of the goals of Euro 2024, equalising in emphatic fashion to earn Switzerland a point against Scotland.

Scotland took the lead in the Group A clash at Cologne’s RheinEnergieStadion in the 13th minute when Scott McTominay’s left-footed strike deflected in-off Fabian Schar.

But Shaqiri levelled the game up in the 26th minute minute after capitalising on Anthony Ralston’s loose backpass.

And from just outside the box with Scotland’s defenders closing him down, he bent an exquisite effort into the top left corner to leave Angus Gunn no chance.

In doing so, he has become the first European player to score in the last three European Championships and World Cups.

Ronaldo has also scored in the last five tournaments, but couldn’t find the back of the net in Portugal’s win over Czech Republic on Tuesday night.

And this has seen Shaqiri pip him to achieving the remarkable feat – and what a way to do it.

Shaqiri, who plies his trade in the MLS with Chicago Fire, has also become the first footballer to score in a European Championship match while playing for a team in either North or South America.

His first goals at a major tournament came at the 2014 World Cup, where he banged in a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Honduras.

He then found the back of the net against Poland at Euro 2016 with a stunning scissor kick from outside the box,

And Shaqiri then poked home a dramatic winner against Serbia at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Three goals then followed at Euro 2020, where he scored twice in a 3-1 win over Turkey.

The former Bayern Munich forward was then on target against Spain in the quarter-final, with Switzerland succumbing to a penalty shootout defeat.

And at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he scored yet again against Serbia as Switzerland edged out a five-goal thriller.
