Luke Shaw was set to make his first appearance at Euro 2024 – as the player representative at England’s press conference on Wednesday.
However, the Manchester United defender has decided he would rather do his talking on the pitch.
Ivan Toney will now speak to the media after Shaw opted out of pre-match responsibilities.
talkSPORT understands Shaw has not picked up another injury, but would prefer to speak if he plays.
The 28-year-old has not played a singled minute of football since February due to a hamstring injury.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate took a gamble on the defender’s fitness by including him in England’s Euro 2024 squad.
He has not yet appeared in any of the tournament games – although he was named in the matchday squads against both Slovenia and Slovakia.
Some thought Shaw’s initial selection for media duties could be an indication that the full-back is ready to start against Switzerland on Saturday.
With England struggling in the absence of an established left-back option, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had already told talkSPORT that Shaw’s return could be imminent.
“He was ready to come on last night,” said Pickford after their last 16 tie against Slovakia. “But I’m not the manager. He’s ready, Luke says he’s ready.
“There will have to be changes (against Switzerland) with Marc Guehi suspended but that’s what a 26-man squad is all about. Everyone’s got to be ready and everyone is ready to play.”
Meanwhile, manager Southgate remained reserved about whether Shaw would make an appearance in the quarter finals after all.
Speaking in his post-match press conference after England’s victory over Slovakia, Southgate was asked whether Shaw playing in the next match was a possibility.
“Yeah, I think that’s got a chance,” he admitted. “I mean, we could have put him on, but he has done so little full team training that would been a huge risk.
“A bit more training and a little bit more evidence for us of the level he is at would be helpful.”
