Shooter Jitu Rai Retires From Army To Focus On Grooming Youngsters

Asian Games gold medallist marksman Jitu Rai, who shattered the myth that a humble background can hinder success at the highest level, has decided to retire from the Indian Army to train young athletes to become world-beaters. Born in the Sankhuwa Sabha district of Nepal, the 36-year-old Khel Ratna and Padma Shri awardee was the only Indian shooter to win a gold at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. This achievement helped him rise through the ranks to become an Honorary Captain in the Army.


Wimbledon: Rain Delays Play 

The rain delayed play in the morning for a second straight day at Wimbledon on Saturday, with organizers already having some catching up to do after several matches were suspended overnight.

Light rain fell over the All England Club and play on the outside courts was postponed until at least 12:45 p.m. (11: 45 GMT), a delay of an hour and 45 minutes.

However, the weather forecast said showers could continue until well into the afternoon, possibly disrupting an already crammed schedule. (AP)

Euro 2024: Bernhard Langer Bids Farewell

Bernhard Langer has bid farewell to the European tour on home soil in Germany 50 years after the two-time Masters champion made his debut.

The 66-year-old Langer missed the cut at the BMW International Open in Munich on Friday but said he will cherish the “wonderful memories” he’s made.

“It’s hard to put into words. It’s kind of been a dream come true for me, growing up in a village of 800 people where nobody knew what golf was,” Langer said.

“When I told my classmates I’m going to go play golf, they thought I was crazy. I was able to live that dream for 50 years.” (AP)

The Paris Olympic-bound top Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat advanced to the final of the women’s 50kg category in the Grand Prix of Spain in Madrid.

Vinesh received her Schengen visa at the last minute on Wednesday with the help of Sports Ministry and Ministry of External Affairs. She won three bouts without much difficulty to storm into the final.

Ace Indian cueist Pankaj Advani fell short in his quest to secure a hat-trick of titles, losing 2-5 to compatriot Dhruv Sitwala in the final of the 2024 Asian Billiards Championship in Riyadh on Saturday.

Advani managed to improve his game, scoring 36 points, but Dhruv maintained his dominance with another 100. Advani found his rhythm in the third frame and outplayed Dhruv, achieving a remarkable 101. Dhruv, however, had an off-frame, scoring only two points. (PTI)

England had a few chances in the first half, while Switzerland also tried hard, but neither of the teams found the final pass.

With 0-0 draw till the half time, now England and Switzerland are to play in the second half.

The deadlock was broken by Embolo who gave Switzerland a 1-0 lead after slotting home from close range in the 75th minute.

The Shubman Gill-led India were unable to chase down a modest target of 116 runs, as hosts Zimbabwe bowled them out for a mere 102-run total. The visitors’ team featured none of the players from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024-winning unit.
