Defending champions Italy head into their Round of 16 match against neighbours Switzerland has favourites to progress into the quarter finals of Euro 2024, potentially setting up a rematch of the final of Euro 2020, which the Italians won on penalties.
Luciano Spalletti’s side qualified for the knockout stage earlier in the week in dramatic fashion, scoring a 98th minute equaliser to rescue a point against Croatia and snatch a second-placed finish in Group B behind Spain.
The two-time European champions finished with four points to their name in the group following their opening day victory over Albania, which was followed up by a 1-0 defeat to Spain before their dramatic final outing against Croatia in Leipzig.
The Italians head into the knockout stage having lost only one of their last nine matches in all competitions, and will back themselves to reach the last eight of the Euros for the fifth time in a row.
Switzerland also head into Saturday’s match in the German capital in confident mood, having been just moments away from finishing top of Group A ahead of a much-fancied Germany side before conceding a 92nd minute equaliser against the hosts in the final group game.
Murat Yakin’s side kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a strong performance in their 3-1 win over Hungary, before being held to consecutive 1-1 draws against Scotland and Germany, securing them a second-placed finish in Group A.
Euro 2020 saw the Swiss achieve their best performance in the competition by reaching the quarter finals, notably beating the then-world champions France in the last 16 three years ago, and they’ll be full of belief they can reach the last eight again this time around.
Switzerland make the trip to the German capital having drawn three of their last four matches, but have only lost once in 17 matches since their 2022 World Cup exit.
Italy are the nation that Switzerland have come across on most occasions in international football, and vice versa, with the Italians boasting a head-to-head record of 29-8 from their 61 matches.
Five of the last six meetings have ended in draws, including both of their most recent games in 2022 World Cup qualifying, though the Swiss are winless in their last 13 outings against Italy, their most recent victory coming back in 1993.
