In the 1990s, a new construction of the Letzigrund Stadium was planned due to the growing needs of the Weltklasse Zurich. Due to a legal dispute with local residents and left-wing politicians over the new Hardturm stadium, the construction of the Letzigrund stadium was brought forward in order to host three group stage matches of Euro 2008 in this stadium. Due to the construction work, FC Zürich (the team that usually plays there) moved to the Hardturm-Stadion, the home stadium of Grasshopper-Club Zürich, for one season.
The new stadium was inaugurated on August 30, 2007. The first sporting event to take place was the Weltklasse Zürich on September 7, with an attendance of 26,500 spectators. The first soccer match pitted FC Zürich against Grasshopper-Club Zürich on September 23.
