Switzerland’s Eurovision representative, Nemo, made a powerful statement during the Eurovision 2024 finale on Sunday by proudly displaying a non-binary flag on stage. According to reports, Nemo waved the flag after a fan was removed from the arena for also carrying the same flag, although this has not been officially confirmed. Nemo garnered significant support on social media platforms.
“Nemo taking the non-binary flag on to the stage after it has reportedly been banned in the arena, that’s monarch!” one person wrote on X.
Another wrote, “After security kicked out an eurofan from the arena for wearing the non-binary flag with them, NEMO IS PROUDLY WEARING IT AT THE FLAG PARADE.”
“Today a fan got their non binary flag taken away because it was “political” and now nemo walked on stage with the same flag. i’m so proud of them,” a third person expresses.
“Nemo, my precious, with the non-binary flag, representing, that is what this show is about,” wrote another user.
Nemo, a 24-year-old Swiss musician who uses they/them pronouns, spoke about the significance of representing the non-binary community in Switzerland.
“People start understanding more and I think that understanding means the world to me. And just being able to represent this community at Eurovision is amazing. And I´m so glad that I am not even the only one this year. You know, like that´s even better because it just, it just shows that it´s needed,” Nemo told AP.
Nemo’s song “The Code,” a strong contender for the Eurovision win, delves into their struggle with identity within a binary system.
“(It) would be cool if people like my song about banana pudding,” Nemo told AP. “But knowing they like a song where I am, like, unconditionally myself, and I talk about the journey of finding myself and being non-binary and knowing that it touches them … it´s really beautiful.”
