Shoutout to the Scotland supporter who was next to us on the train from Dusseldorf to Cologne.
Unable to get accommodation nearby, he booked a hotel in Amsterdam, flying into the Netherlands yesterday before embarking on a three-hour train journey to Cologne this afternoon — likely five hours on German rail.
With the last train back to Amsterdam leaving 10 minutes before full-time, his plan was to stay up until 5am, get the train to Amsterdam, reclaim his suitcase from his hotel room, before flying back to Edinburgh and driving three hours north to his home.
The best thing — he doesn’t have a ticket to the match. Some commitment to soak in a fanzone — and his story is one of hundreds similar.
